Vanland

It may look like something you tow to your favourite seaside location, but Vanland's touring caravan is far from ordinary on the inside. In fact the two-berth caravan has been transformed into a spectacular video exhibition space containing eight different viewing stations, screening fourteen films in different combinations! During each exhibition the films are projected onto windows, hidden in overhead lockers, secreted in the shower room... audience members are able to circulate around the exhibition viewing mini-documentaries, two minute thrillers and psychological dramas... all made by young people aged 14+ from the Teignbridge District.

The Vanland project is really exciting because it offers young people a chance to share their views of rural life with the wider community and learn about different aspects of film making such as concept development, script writing, storyboarding, performance for camera, camera skills, image and sound editing. Both the film making workshops and the exhibition happen on location in the villages where the young people live.

This year Blind Ditch have been making films with young people from Bungalow Youth Project, Buckfastleigh, Coombeshead College, Newton Abbot and Moretonhampstead Youth Group. Next year they are looking forward to working with more young people from Moretonhampstead, Buckfastleigh and areas around Christow, Dunsford and Dawlish.

George Giles, Chairman of Teignbridge Rural Regeneration Partnership said: "...The Vanland project is being partly supported for four years by the Teignbridge Rural Regeneration Partnership with a grant of £60,000 through the EU funded LEADER+ programme. The partnership is supporting Vanland because it considers it to be an innovative opportunity for young people to gain access to the latest media and to express their views about rural life. Vanland also fits our aim to improve access to opportunities often not available in rural communities, and to encourage people to develop their personal, as well as, technical skills..."

Art down on the farm.........

Field Sign

The first Art Farm Project took place at Middle Rocombe Farm, near Stokenteignhead in September 2003.

Over 3000 visitors came to see and experience the best of Teignbridge's artists in a new environment and over £13,000 worth of artwork was sold.

Work from around fifty artists was exhibited during the nine-day event, including paintings, sculptures, tapestries and photographs.

Outdoor Sculptures

Workshops encouraged hands-on participation and provided opportunities to try skills such as raku fired ceramics, clay sculpture, landscape drawings and working with willow.

Exhibition

Young people were also encouraged to participate at a special Children's Art Tent.

Seminars on the topics of 'New Spaces for Art' and 'Art & Agriculture' also proved popular.
